TRA ATP Remote Monitoring
Partnering with an international supplier to deliver a customized ATP monitoring system across Taiwan Railways.
- Client
- Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA)
- Partner
- Bombardier Transportation (now Alstom)
- Sector
- Railway signaling & monitoring
- Scale
- 297+ stations across Taiwan
- Goal
- Remotely monitor trackside ATP equipment to detect malfunctions efficiently
Background & challenge
TRA maintained trackside ATP units manually — staff inspected each unit for faults, which was inefficient and resource-intensive. TRA needed a system to remotely track the functionality of ATP units across the rail network. Developing a customized solution during pandemic restrictions and delayed component deliveries added further pressure on the schedule.
Our approach
As this was a customized system for TRA, Welltek acted as the go-between for TRA and Bombardier — capturing requirements, demonstrating the value of the solution, and ensuring Bombardier could tailor a system to Taiwan's unique railway environment. Because installation spanned 297+ stations, each with a unique layout, Welltek supplied detailed maps and drawings to integrate TRA's track layouts, assembled monitoring equipment to each station's needs, and kept in-country technicians ready to respond. To combine the new system with existing trackside ATP units, Welltek designed a wire frame that fit inside existing cabinets — avoiding a full rebuild. Where locations lacked internet coverage, Welltek renegotiated the contract to complete the network as coverage became available.
Results
TRA now has a centralized monitoring system for its network of ATP trackside equipment, enabling more accurate and efficient maintenance, freeing resources and advancing railway safety standards. Welltek helped Bombardier build a local market for remote ATP monitoring from scratch and deepened Bombardier's relationship with TRA.
Welltek's services
- Supplier & operator coordination
- Equipment localization
- Installation, testing & electromechanical design
- Legacy & new technology integration
Our service begins with promotion to TRA, making the case, and communication with Bombardier to produce new equipment and systems to meet the client's requirements. Based on the project's scope, the time taken to complete, and the quality we delivered, this project accurately benchmarks the value we bring to the railway industry.
